The Bangaldeshi Stop Tobacco Project has been running for ten years as cessation program after the publication of the 1998 ‘Smoking Kills’ White Paper. It outlined a number of issues in ineqaulities in health due to tobacco use and accessing services. At the time of the White Paper Professor Croucher and his team were carrying out evidence based work as part of a Health Action Zone Initiative (HAZ).  This initiative is now a fully funded service supporting members of the Bangladeshi Community in Tower Hamlets to give up tobacco use.

The service is culturally sensitive and provides language and gender based support for men and women and is managed by Professor Croucher and run by Shamsia Begum and Dipul Ghosh.  We are currently hosting Dr Muhammad Haque in his Phd concerning oral pain and toabcco use in Bangladeshi women.

I am a physician who practices in the U.S., and I have many Bengali patients who chew paan. I am looking for some written information to give them, in Bengali (if possible) and/or English, that would explain the risks associated with the use of paan. If anyone knows of any, please send me an email. Thanks so much!
